The Issues
While the responsibilities of State Representatives are wide ranging, they are mostly divided between being a legislature in the Statehouse and sitting on the Belknap County Delegation making decisions at the county level such as funding for the county nursing home, sheriff’s office, county corrections and the county attorney. I will highlight below some of the issues I believe are most important to the people of Meredith. If an issue that is dear to you isn’t addressed below, please contact me and I’d love to listen and learn what’s important to you.
Maintaining New Hampshire’s Advantage of Lower Taxes
New Hampshire is a bastion of good tax policy in the Northeast. I will continue that tradition by never supporting a state sales or income tax. We must also maintain a business-friendly environment by cutting government red tape that hinders economic prosperity and costs people and businesses money when trying to get things done.
Cost of Living
As a father of three, I understand how expensive life in New Hampshire has become. First and foremost, the biggest impact I can have is by keeping taxes low and government small. Other major factors contributing to the increase in costs are housing and childcare. I support creating state programs that towns can choose to participate in, allowing them to develop housing in a way that fits their character and the will of the town residents. We need to do what we can to spur more childcare options, whether they be traditional daycare or at-home providers. More options for families are always better.
Abortion
I believe New Hampshire's current abortion laws reflect the overwhelming majority of Granite Staters' beliefs on the issue, and I don't believe any major changes should be made.
Second Amendment
New Hampshire has a proud tradition of supporting our Second Amendment rights, and I will continue that tradition.
Education
We need to return to the basics in our children’s education rather than pushing agendas. I will ensure that teachers are supported and that we watch for administrative creep, making sure any new programs enhance core educational objectives rather than simply driving up budgets and distracting from preparing students for the real world. I also believe we need more educational opportunities focusing on trade skills, which would be a great way to partner with the private sector in education.
Immigration
I am strongly against illegal immigration and believe that supporting it in any way is an affront to the millions of legal immigrants who did it the right way. I oppose granting drivers licenses to illegal immigrants and am against sanctuary cities, which could cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Additionally, I believe in securing our northern border to prevent it from becoming a crisis.
Mental health crisis
First and foremost, we need to create economic conditions that allow people to prosper and achieve a fulfilling and productive life, so that despair doesn’t lead to addiction and mental health issues. Decades ago, New Hampshire was at the forefront of mental health treatment. Unfortunately, these basic services have suffered, leaving our current system of care severely lacking. Early intervention saves lives and ultimately reduces both the human and fiscal costs to taxpayers. An efficient, comprehensive, and accessible mental health system ultimately saves taxpayer money. We need to make seeking help for mental health issues as routine as going to a doctor when you think your leg might be broken.
